Proper Keyword Selection

February 8, 2010

By carefully deciding on the best pertinent keyword phrases and then using solid off-page optimization, you will be guaranteed increased online traffic for your site. This is good news for online marketers and anyone else needing mass traffic in order to attain online sales goals. It takes some work but is definitely worth the time and effort, so don’t be lazy!

Your very first consideration when trying to optimize your web pages should be keyword phrases. Your web success is influenced on how well you can choose these; After all, this is what people have typed into Google or other search engines to find the site they are searching for.

Keywords should be popular terms, this means many searches are being conducted on the search engines. Words with a search count of 300 to 500 are good. Keyword phrases with a search count of 500 to 1,000 are really good. Search count here stands for how many times per month the keyword has been searched.

A standard rule of thumb is to pick keyword phrases that bear a Keyword Effectiveness Index of 10 or better. KEI is a large, very complex issue, fortuitously all you are required to center on is knowing that the higher the index the simpler the keyword phrase will be to optimize.

In other words, a extremely popular search term without too many competing web pages will sustain a larger KEI than a extremely popular search keyword phrase with many, many competing sites.

You should center on keyword phrases that are in demand, yet not so competitive that ranking on the first 3 page results in Yahoo!, MSN and Google, is within reach.

I need to emphasize, going through the process of off-line SEO using bad keyword phrases is useless. They should be specific enough to get the targeted traffic but not so strange that nobody is searching for those keywords.

The problem with optimizing your website using poorly picked keyword phrases, your final result may be increased web traffic, but not bringing you the particular type of person you had wanted, so it is very critical to get this right, all your other SEO efforts are regulated by the initial keyword phrases you ultimately decide to use.
