Web Content: An Online Must-Have

February 8, 2010
By Adam Torkildson

Content can be defined quite simply-it is all the material, including text and images, that makes up a publication or document. When talking about a website, or other online content, this definition needs to be expanded.

Online content is not the flashy banner at the top of the page or the occasional bothersome pop-up that crosses a viewer’s path. Online content is the core of the site. It is the information that visitors want or need and the reason they are there in the first place. Without good content, you essentially have nothing.

For those that have ever attempted to start a website, or even a simple blog, it is initially an exciting process. You pick out color schemes, arrange eye-catching graphics, and advertise in any way you can to draw people in to see your new creation. So what happens next? Once a visitor to your site has seen your well-designed layout what motivation do they have to stay, or to ever return again? This is where your content as a web space owner and writer becomes extremely important.

To write accurate and compelling content, it is important to get to know the intended audience and plan the rest of the site accordingly. If the target audience is a professional in the world of business, it is highly doubtful that celebrity gossip will intrigue them much, especially if they came to learn how to write a winning resume. As a web content writer, the responsibility is to get to know the target audience at a deep level. There needs to be an understanding of what they will be interested in reading about, what sort of language they regularly use and understand, what level of professionalism is expected, and so on.

Once you have done that, you need to establish your credibility as a reliable source of information. Online content can often be discounted because it is unprofessional or contains false information. Good online content provides information that is relevant to the audience, honest, and interesting all at the same time. With all of these things combined, the online content becomes a quick and easy source of reliable information that people will come to trust and can return to at any time.

Though online content is often taken for granted, or put second to web page design, it is the one element that will retain readers and encourage more visitors to stay. Content that is audience-specific yet inviting to a wider crowd is the mainstay of any good web site.
